Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa
Why go? Although no one can guarantee wildlife sightings, there’s a good chance that you will see all of the Big 5 in Sabi Sands Game Reserve—sometimes all in one day! It shares an unfenced border with the famous (and very popular) Kruger National Park, so you get the same great wildlife viewing, but without the crowds. Plus, the Sabi Sands is one of the best places to see leopards, which can be difficult to spot elsewhere.
Accommodations: The Sabi Sands has several high-end safari lodges offering luxurious rooms and 5-star service. There are options for all types of travelers, including families, honeymooners, and groups of friends. Note, you do pay a premium for being in one of Africa’s best safari destinations!
When to go: Wildlife viewing is great all year, even in Green Season; May to October is considered the very best time.
Okavango Delta, Botswana
Why go? Each year, the Okavango Delta undergoes a dramatic transformation as dry, dusty riverbeds begin to flood and fill with lush vegetation. This, in turn, attracts some of the highest concentrations of wildlife found in all of Africa. Think herds of elephant numbering in the hundreds, mega-prides of lion, and a dazzling array of unique birds. Depending on where you stay, you can enjoy water safaris and land-based game drives. The Okavango Delta has long been considered one of the best safaris in Africa.
Accommodations: Botswana intentionally leans toward low-volume, high-income tourism to protect its unique environments. In peak season, Okavango Delta lodges (4- and 5-star) start at $1,000 per person, per night. However, they are exceptionally private and unique.
When to go: To take full advantage of water safaris in the Okavango Delta, visit during June to August, when the water levels are highest. November and December are cheaper months to visit, but can be uncomfortably hot.
The Great Migration, Kenya and Tanzania
Why go? During the Great Migration, up to 2 million wildebeest and other grazers make their way across East Africa’s vast plains in search of fresh grass. It is an unforgettable spectacle to behold and attracts visitors from all over the world! Plus, it’s easy to combine a Great Migration safari with other bucket list destinations, including Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara.
Accommodations: There are many luxurious mobile camps (think wooden floors, real beds, flush toilets, even chandeliers!) that move locations throughout the year to catch the best Great Migration action. There are also some beautiful permanent lodges to choose from if you prefer solid walls.
When to go: Generally speaking, July to October is the best time for a Great Migration safari.
Victoria Falls, Zambia and Zimbabwe
Why go? Victoria Falls is the world’s largest waterfall and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. There are so many things to do at Victoria Falls, whether you’re looking for an adrenaline rush (bungy jumping, anyone?) or simply want to relax and watch the sunset on a river cruise. Victoria Falls is easily combined with safari destinations in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.
Accommodations: If you’re looking to save some money, there are some fantastic hotels in Victoria Falls Town or Livingstone. For a more immersive experience, you can stay in a unique river lodge.
When to go: The Falls are fullest in April and May. Victoria Falls doesn’t look quite as impressive from August to January, but this is the best time for adventure activities, including Devil’s Pool.
Chobe National Park, Botswana
Why go? Chobe National Park has some of the highest concentrations of elephants in all of Africa! Up in the northern areas of the park, you can enjoy a Chobe River water safari. Further south, the Savute region offers exceptional wildlife viewing and a very different experience.
Accommodations: There are a wide range of accommodations to choose from, including many beautiful, semi-permanent tented lodges.
When to go: The riverfront area is best from May to October. Wildlife migrates to the Savute region around November to March.
